Wolf Park Family Photo Album

Wolf Park is currently home to 18 adult wolves. The Park also has a small herd of bison, two coyotes and 3 red foxes. All but the bison have been socialized to people and can be sponsored. Click on Wolf Adoptions above for more information on this program.

The wolves at Wolf Park live in several different packs and groupings. This page gives a brief overview of the animals at Wolf Park. It is arranged somewhat the way that the animals live in real life. You can take a leisurely scroll down this page, or if you want to go to a specific group or animal, click one of the links below:

Tristan - Born in 1998 Tristan is the only male Wolf Hollow puppy we kept (his two brothers were donated to another facility in Knoxville, Tennessee). Tristan has grown to be among the biggest wolves in the pack. Well, at least the tallest. His is probably right around 90 pounds and is definitely his father Martin's son. Well, except for the teeth, Martin had an under bite. Tristan is a goof, thinks he's a lap puppy and also loves to rub on people, but in his case he sometimes pushes them right over. Despite his size, Tristan is also quite agile and loves climbing trees. He is one of only a few wolves who have shown much talent for this.

Though he was brought here to add new genes to the pack, Tristan has never mated, well, until he finally mated with his sister, Erin, which resulted in the four pups born in 2004. Tristan has since had a vasectomy so there will be no more inbred pups.

Around Memorial Day, 2001, Tristan finally matured. Though a late bloomer, he found that rank was something important to a young male wolf and he stopped submitting to Miska, then the beta male of the pack. The two got into a fight. Though it was a minor one with hardly any injuries, Tristan prevailed and has since become a well established pack beta. There seems little chance that he will ever lose his position to Miska for he has become quite good at making sure Miska never gets any 'ideas' about regaining confidence.

In turn, Seneca, the alpha male, realized that Tristan was in fact more than just a pack clown and he made quite sure that Tristan did not get any ideas about being alpha! At least not while Seneca was in charge...

In the spring of 2003, Tristan got his promotion. The pack was split with Tristan, Chetan and Erin forming the "Happy Pack" and Seneca, Marion and Miska forming the "Alpha Pack". Everybody seems much more relaxed and 'happier' with this new arrangement and so far Tristan has made a fine alpha. Then, in August 2004, Tristan's pack increased to 7 with the addition of his four pups.

Ayla Ayla was born on April 12th, we surmise, because her mother, Erin, went into her den and refused to come out, except very briefly for about four days. During that time, if we saw Erin out she was getting a drink, picking up some take-home food, being fed a "hot lunch" by Tristan or Chetan, or she was repelling human invaders to the island who were hoping to hear puppies squeaking. (Staff only went onto the island once before it was time to take the pups, because it was plain that Erin did not want us there. Tristan and Chetan wanted to go into the den too and Erin would not allow them access either.) Either Tristan or Chetan is Ayla's father; because of her date of birth, Tristan is a more probable candidate for biological fatherhood than Chetan. Ayla's name is from the Jean Auel prehistorical novel series starting with Clan of the Cave Bear.

Together with her sister and two brothers Ayla was taken from the den on April 22 by staff member Dana Drenzek By then Ayla's eyes were already open. She was also first to start suckling on human fingers. She readily made the transition from Erin's milk to formula from a bottle, and is always ready to eat even if she has just eaten.

As the pups' personalities emerged, puppy moms Peggy and Pam both agreed that Ayla's personality is strong. She is competitive. Pam says that Ayla is all for equal opportunity as long as Ayla gets to be first for everything, including the puppy mothers' attention. Ayla reacted to Pam's voice on April 24 by pricking up her ears.

Her weight, when taken from the den on April 22 was about two pounds and on April 28 it had increased to about three pounds

Kailani, a Hawaiian word meaning "sea and sky," was born on April 12th, we think, when her mother Erin went into her den on the island in our Turtle Lake Enclosure, and refused to come out except for the most pressing needs, such as water, a little food, relieving herself, and threatening the knees of inquisitive staff who approached the den in hopes of hearing puppy squeaks. Staff only tried this once because we could tell Erin did not want us there. Tristan and Chetan repeatedly went to the den entrance but were never allowed in either. Erin displayed no species' prejudice when it came to the privacy of her den. Kailani's father is either Tristan or Chetan, but because of the date of birth, there is a better chance that Tristan sired the litter.

Unlike her more active and competitive sister, Kailani is less demanding. She likes to sleep. In fact, she is a "napmeister," and her sleeping position of choice is on her back with her paws sticking up in the air. One of the hazards of sleeping on your back is, that if you roll over near the edge of the mattress, you may tumble off. Kailani rolled off the mattress and landed on her brother Ruedi, and then rolled off him onto the floor. She was well cushioned and did not mind the experience. (Ruedi was not happy about being used as a landing pad.) She likes to be cuddled and falling asleep while being cuddled allows her to combine two pleasures successfully.

Kailani often sleeps apart from her littermates (perhaps because she is interrupted less often while practicing the Art of the Nap when she sleeps alone). Once when she was resting on her back, mouth open and turning her head from side to side, her brother Ruedi walked across her. While moving her head from side to side, she felt Ruedi's muzzle and took hold of it briefly.

Currently she holds the title of Puppy Most Closely Resembling a Square as she is nearly as wide as she is long. Her weight when taken from the den, by staff member Dana Drenzek, on April 22, was about two pounds; by April 28 she was up to three and a half pounds.

Renki was named for Irenaus Eibl-Eibesfeldt, a well-known German ethologist and friend of Dr. Klinghammer, little Renki was taken, by staff member Dana Drenzek, from the den where he was born on April 12. When Dana handed him out of the den, his eyes were already open. His mother is Erin, and his father is either Tristan or Chetan. Because of the date of birth we think that it is more likely that Tristan sired the litter. The birth date is a well educated guess. Erin went into the den on April 12, and only came out to drink, get food, relieve herself and repel would be well wishers whom she obviously regarded as invaders. Erin displayed no species prejudice and the only difference she made between her mates, Tris and Chetan, and the human staff who approached the den, was that Tris and Chetan were allowed a little closer. Humans were in peril of having Erin attached by her teeth to their knees, and Tristan once found Erin clamped on his nose like a large furry nose ring when he overstepped his bounds.

On his first day away from his mother, he seemed very aware of his surroundings. While engaged in exploratory crawling on the mattress, Renki came to its edge. Apparently detecting the eight inch (estimated) drop off there, Renki backed away from the edge. Then he approached the edge again. The drop off was still there. He backed off again. Puppy mother Pam first noticed him responding to her voice, by approaching when he heard it on April 25th, at the age of fourteen days.

Though he is not the napmeister his sister Kailani is, Renki likes his comforts, preferring nice comfy towels, or even sheets of newspaper, to cold slate floor. He likes to fall asleep sucking on his human foster moms' fingers. He likes to suck them for a really long time. He also likes to sleep on human feet. He likes to be scratched and his scratch reflexes are in fine working order.

He has a really big head and weighed nearly three pounds when taken from his mother. One week later he weighed a solid three and a half pounds. He has stopped waiting for the drop off at the edge of the mattress to go away and has learned bi-directional clambering instead.

Ruedi is named for Rudolph Schenkel, who published the first wolf ethogram (a catalog of wolf body language and facial expression which can be loosely called a wolf-to-human dictionary). He was born on April 12th, we think, when his mother Erin went into her den on the island in our Turtle Lake Enclosure and refused to come out except for the most pressing needs. This is an educated guess. None of us, whether human or lupine, were allowed in the den, though Tris and Chetan were vouchsafed permission to go a little closer, and permitted even look in the doorway. Erin was ready to use her teeth on tactless well- wishers of either species. The humans backed off hastily, but Tristan once got to briefly experience what Erin would be like as a nose ring when he over stepped his bounds. Meanwhile, Ruedi's father is either Tristan or Chetan, but because of the date of birth, there is a better chance that Tristan sired the litter.

His human foster parents describe Ruedi as possessed of a very strong personality. In spite of this he goes limp when gently rocked with an up and down motion while resting lengthwise along a human forearm (the human holds him while doing this so he won't slip off). This rocking, or gentle bouncing, mimics the motion he would experience if his mother carried him in her mouth. He quiets right down when he feels this.

Though his eyes were shut when staff member Dana Drenzek removed him from his mother's den, Ruedi still has several firsts to his name. Ruedi's current claim to fame is the title of First Howler in His Litter. He howled at twelve days of age. He was also the first one to show rudimentary "lavatory behavior" by moving away from the sleeping area to urinate and then returning to bed. He was also the first to clamp down hard enough on a puppy mom's finger to break skin with a tiny little blood dot on April 29. He was also the first pup to decide he was full, and when he was offered more on April 28th, he refused a second helping of formula.

Currently Ruedi's personality seems to express itself in clear indications of what he does not like, such as puppies rolling off the mattress and landing on top of him. At first he was not eager to start suckling on human fingers, though he was ready to lick them. He made up for his reluctance by feeding enthusiastically from the bottle when it was introduced, and he insists on the easy flow nipple, which delivers the formula quickly. He growls at his littermates if they wake him up. At only around two weeks old, Ruedi was eager to greet new humans coming into the nursery. If would be nice if he kept this trait into adulthood, but of course it is too soon to tell.

His weight, when taken from the den by staff member Dana Drenzek was a healthy two and three quarters pounds and by April 29 he weighed three and a quarter pounds.

Wotan was born April 18th, 2005 to Erin and Chetan. Wotan is an adventurous young male who enjoys turning his "winning smile" on people to see if they will adore him. He has mastered the art of tilting his head "just so" to charm people out of attention or treats. In just the right light, Wotan resembles his grandfather, Socrates. You can definitely see a lot of his father in him as well.

As he matured, Wotan has acquired political aspirations. Not only has he started to become the more dominant brother with Wolfgang, he has also successfully asserted himself over Ruedi and is even beginning to push Renki's buttons. If successful, Wotan will become the pack's new beta, and who knows, maybe someday even alpha! "Wotan for Alpha" has become a common catch phrase with staff as this young wolf 'campaigns' for a high ranking position in the pack.

Wolfgang was born April 18th, 2005 to Erin and Chetan. Wolfgang is studying under Sensei Renki to learn the art of pushing people's "on" button. He hasn't gotten Renki's persistence down yet but he appears to be observing and trying out the ideas. They don't always stick, though, and he enjoys meeting new people and occasionally sitting on their foot.

Wolfgang is also beginning to push pack buttons as well. Both Renki and especially Ruedi get into spectacular jaw sparring matches with this upstart of a wolf.

The Eastlake Community

Eastlake is Wolf Park's 'retirement' community. It is where wolves who were never part of the main park as well as those who have been driven out, or otherwise removed from, the Main Pack now reside.

The Alpha Pack

Miska

Marion

Miska - Born in 1996 to Altair and Chinook, Miska was the often challenged beta pup of his litter. Miska is not as independent as his brother, Seneca. Members of the public even commented that he was a non stop whiner. As a pup he was very submissive with humans and often elicited tummy rubs. However, even as a young pup he showed the same tendency to get mouthy as the classical 'Chinookling'.

As a yearling, Miska had not changed much. He was well known at the Park to ask nicely for a belly rub, but if you tried to stop, his mouth usually found a leg to hold onto. Being the hardest mouthed wolf we have ever had, this was not very pleasant.

As Miska matured, he strove for the alpha position. During the summer of 1998 he was actually able to obtain this when his brother, Seneca, backed down. Seneca has since reclaimed his alpha position and Miska no longer seems to have any desire to regain it.

Miska remained the beta male of the pack for several years, but in the late spring of 2001 Tristan, the youngest male in the pack, finally matured enough to feel his oats... Though a late bloomer, Tristan easily dominated Miska around Memorial Day and took over as the pack's new Beta male. Miska eventually lost his position to even Chetan, but has since at least regained dominance to now be the third ranking member of the pack.

Due to his general lack of manners with new people, Miska is not allowed to meet sponsors, but other wolves are eager to take his place.

Marion - Born in 1998 to Karin and Seneca, Marion is a virtual clone of her mom -- at least in how she treats other wolves... This is a reasonably good thing if you are a human for she is very outgoing and not shy at all. In fact, she is often an outright pest -- especially at those times when she is chewing on our clothing. She has been known to go from one person to another relieving them of all traces of shoe lace... We now systematically douse all shoes with anti-chew spray to keep her from chewing and possibly guarding peoples' shoes against them!

Like Karin, Marion also loves training and picks up commands in a matter of seconds. However, being like mom is not a good thing if you are a wolf. Marion has actually bitten every wolf in the pack and like Karin, has even helped drive wolves from the pack. First there was Apollo, who was bitten up on the rear so much that we had to take him out for his own safety. Then, in July 1999, after Karin lost any control over Erin or Marion, the two of them joined forces and drove Karin from the pack. This left Marion as the pack's new alpha female.

It took her quite some time to actually live up to that position, but in the winter of 1999/2000 Marion began acting more and more the alpha and less and less the bully. She then mated with her father, Seneca, the alpha male in January and early February 2000 many times and the two have now bonded as the pack's new alpha couple quite nicely. Fortunately, we had taken Marion in to see Dr. Harper, our veterinarian, to have her sterilized so we will not have any inbred pups. Such inbreeding seems to be common in captivity, but recent genetic work on wild wolves has shown this to be very uncommon in the wild.

Meet the Pillow Pack

Apollo

Karin

Karin - Born in 1994, Karin was "imported" from the Wildlife Science Center, in Minnesota. Karin is a sister to Orca. At the time, she was the first female puppy added to the pack since 1988. As a pup, she was a very outgoing friendly wolf who liked to chew on shoe laces - so softly that you hardly realized she was actually doing it. Karin is a skilled and agile "problem solver", who tries out everything without hesitation. She likes to walk over teeter totters, on all sorts of boards and even ladders. Her favorite is the teeter totter which she will often climb on and balance for her own enjoyment.

Altair was extremely lenient over Karin her first year, leading to some very outgoing and precocious behavior. Karin not only was allowed to freely court two high ranking brothers, Kiri and Socrates, but mating with them also was 'allowed'. 63 days later (give or take a couple days) Karin presented Wolf Park with a litter of five healthy puppies -- two full weeks before her own first birthday.

With the passing of Altair in November, 1997, due to complications with cancer and diabetes, Karin inherited the alpha position with Seneca as her new mate. These new alphas produced one litter in 1998 and another in 1999, but in July of 1999, the one female pup we kept from Karin's 1998 litter, along with a female we imported from Wolf Hollow, deposed Karin, driving her from the pack.

Although she was badly injured, Karin is the first alpha female to have survived being deposed. This was due in part to the efforts of Lara Luke, Jill Moore and Monty Sloan who rushed her to the hospital and to Dr. Harper, who came in after hours while on vacation. Her wounds were cleansed and stitched and after some weeks of TLC, Karin healed back to her old self. After about six weeks, she was once again an alpha female of her own little pack of three, the 'Pillow Pack.' Karin has also been sterilized so she can mate, but not have pups.

Apollo - Born in 1995 to Chinook and Altair, Apollo was the largest puppy of his litter. As he grew, he not only became taller, but wider. His first fall, he earned the nickname of "Hairy Pear" due to his build. Following his older brother's habit of grabbing at pant legs, arms, or any other body part which provided itself to be grabbed, Apollo also became known as "The Baby Black Jaws of Death." Fortunately, as he matured, he grew out of both habits and he ended up just being nicknamed "Pillow" since he was quite soft and fluffy.

In April, 1999, Apollo had to come out of the pack. In large part, Marion was responsible for this, but most of the other wolves were involved in his harassment as well. Fortunately, Apollo and Alyeska still liked one another so we paired them up to form a 'Bachelor Pack'. Then, in late summer 1999, we introduced Karin to the pair. She was eagerly accepted, especially by Apollo and the two have since bonded very nicely forming what we like to call the "Pillow Pack".

In the winter of 2000, Apollo became very aggressive and dominant. However, Alyeska did not submit. In fact, the two males had not truly settled rank despite having lived together for nearly nine months. Then, when Karin went into heat, Apollo and Alyeska got into a serious fight. Fortunately they are males and male wolves rarely injure one another seriously. The wounds were the kind that they could lick and make better, so the only medical intervention necessary was some oral antibiotics. Now Alyeska rolls over accepting Apollo as alpha and all three now make a happy trio.

Meet the Fluffies

Chetan

Erin

Chetan - Born in 1995 to a precocious Karin and probably Socrates, Chetan was the only male pup in the litter of five. Chetan means "hawk" in Lakota. A standoffish puppy coat lent to the nick name of "FluffyPup." Later his first winter, his social endeavors "helping" Orca move up in rank earned him the name of "Evil, Wicked Henchpuppy."

We often tell the wolves "what goes around, comes around." This has definitely been the case with Chetan. He used to rush and nip other wolves in the rear. Well, guess what, now he is the one with scars on his butt -- mostly from Marion. Chetan also lost all rank and ended up the lowest ranking male in the pack. He did manage to dominate Miska briefly in the winter of 2002, but that was short lived and he once again became pack omega. However, when the pack was split, though he is was still technically the pack omega, Tristan and Erin did not ride hard on Chetan at all so he now has considerable social freedom. With the addition of the four pups in August, 2004, Chetan has maintained dominance over them, but is showing signs that this might not last.

Erin - Born in 1998 at Wolf Hollow in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Erin is one of our newest arrivals. She is a little bit shy with new people at first, but once she gets to know you, she often won't leave you alone. This is not necessarily a good thing for she can be a bit nippy. We call it sharking and it is annoying to say the least. In other words, her coming up can be a good thing for if she is in a good mood, or a bad thing if she decides to be a pinchy Erin -- what with her habit of biting the backs of people's legs. Her pinching is not terribly hard, but hard enough that it definitely is uncomfortable. For the most part she is OK when people face her and make friends and over the past couple years we have managed to teach her to not pinch as much.

Erin also became very socially aware in the spring of 1999 and took every advantage she could to depose Karin, the alpha female. This nearly got Erin kicked out of the pack by Karin, but in July of 1999, Erin managed to actually dominate Karin and soon after Erin with the help of Marion, drove Karin from the pack. However, Marion then made Erin's life quite miserable and Erin had very little social freedom (and a number of Marion bites to show for it). Things changed considerably for the better in March 2003.

With the other females being sterilized back in 1999, Erin became the only female at Wolf Park in a position to have pups. In January 2000, she went into heat for her first time, but she chose the wrong male. She chose Miska who wanted NOTHING to do with her. The only male who showed her much interest was Tristan, her brother, but she wanted NOTHING to do with him so she never mated. The same basically happened in the following two years.

In 2003 she did finally made with Chetan, but tragically her pups did not survive Then, in 2004, she mated again with Chetan, and with much guarding, and persistence on Tristan's part, with Tris as well. The result was a litter of four pups, two males and two females. The timing of their birth indicates that Tristan is the father.

Meet the Brat Brothers

Kiri

Socrates

Kiri - Born in 1993 and litter-brother to Socrates, Kiri is a black male wolf. When he was a pup, Kiri was very friendly with people, but had a tendency to attach himself to and hang from them on occasion... For this he earned the name of "Black Jaws of Death" for he would often attach those black jaws to a pant leg whenever a handler would try to leave the pen. Kiri also loves water and has the tendency to get quite muddy. For this we have nicknamed him "The Mook Monster" or just "Mookie." He is also often called "Kiri-Cheese" for unbeknownst to our Director, Dr. Klinghammer, who named him, Kiri is also a type of French cheese.

Kiri is also very large, topping the scales at least 110 pounds.

Socrates - Born in 1993 to Altair and Chinook, Socrates is a gray male wolf who, like his father, has a bit of "edge" on him. However, he does sometimes enjoy rolling over and having his tummy rubbed by the staff. Although he was sometimes 'difficult' with people, Socrates was not a social climber like his brother Kiri who quickly became assertive over him while still a pup.

Best of friends/worst of enemies, these two brothers however never really managed to clearly establish rank between them while in the pack. However, following being driving out by Orca shortly after their father's death in the summer of 1996, Kiri eventually was able to formally assert himself over his smaller brother. Of course having a 30 pound advantage did not hurt Kiri's dominance struggle either. Despite Kiri's obvious dominance, Socrates still does not have much respect for his brother.

Although Socrates is good with the Wolf Park staff, like his younger brother, Miska, Socrates is just too difficult for visitors to meet.

The lone females and Orca

Whenever possible, we like to keep wolves in packs or at least with another companion. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Some wolves, like Eclipse, are simply too aggressive to place with another wolf, while others, like Orca, are just not healthy or strong enough for a companion. Wolves do not always get along with another adult which they did not grow up with and placing a young pup in with an older animal just to give that older wolf a companion, would not be very fair to the wolf pup, nor often fair to the older adult.

No longer able to live with their respective packs, these 'lone' wolves have either outlived their companions in retirement, or are still awaiting a friend. However, they mutually dislike one another and could never be safely introduced. Although they live 'alone' they do get chances to explore the bison fields and lots of visits from Wolf Park Interns.

Eclipse

Echo

Eclipse was born to Orca and Karin in 1997. Along with her foster brother Atticus, Eclipse was sent to the Turtle Back Zoo, in West Orange, New Jersey, to be part of their display when she was three months old. Unfortunately, Eclipse is no longer compatible with the wolves at that facility and was in need of a new home. Wolf Park takes pride in the fact that pups born here always have a home here — so Eclipse has returned home on the evening of November 5, 2004. For more of her move here, check out our special Eclipse Page.

Although shy, she is beginning to warm up to staff members and by the spring of 2005, there should be no problem with sponsor visits.

Echo was born to Akili and Vega in April of 1992. She was donated to the Institute of Environmental Learning along with her brother, Ulrich, when 10 weeks old. The went to live with two half sisters who were born a year earlier.

The Institute closed down in 1998 and the wolves were donated to the Binghamton Zoo in NY. Echo was the last of her pack and the zoo no longer wanted to keep wolves so, with the help of Lois, Echo's human puppy mother, we were able to bring her back home. Echo is very outgoing, but can be pushy at times, especially with women.

Orca

Orca - Born in 1994, was brought from Minnesota as a tiny puppy. Orca is a wolf who as a youngster, had beautiful, distinctive black lines on his face and whose behavior was full of contrasts: on the one hand, Orca was spooky and afraid of strange noises and movements and could be very shy toward strangers. On the other hand, once he knew somebody he did a very exuberant greeting, even kissing them on the face in almost a frantic fashion. When he was a pup, he had always submitted to Funny, a female Collie, but when we first brought in Altair to the puppies, Orca raised his hackles and growled at the alpha female!

The 1994 puppies went through an agility course. When it came to training Orca to walk on obstacles, including ladders and similar objects, he acted very scared and would refuse to have anything to do with it - until suddenly one day he would decide that board is not very scary anymore, and ladders are fun to walk on... Orca is always good for surprises.

In early 1996, through a series of events, Orca was able to take advantage of other males in the pack and quickly moved from #5 to #2 in the rank order. Following Chinook's death in July 1996, Orca was able to "inherit" the alpha position. Later in the winter of 96/97 Alyeska challenged Orca for the position of alpha male, but lost leaving Orca the uncontested dominant male.

However, Orca would still defer to Altair, the alpha female and overall pack leader. A position that Altair maintained until her untimely death in November 1997.

Orca's position remained uncontested until his accident only a few weeks later. This accident has unfortunately resulted in his permanent removal from the pack. A lot of people ask us what exactly happened, but only Orca knows and he is not telling. The mostly likely thing is that he simply slipped while running, and he would run after Apollo or Alyeska at speeds exceeding 30 mph! Click here for details on how Orca is doing now

Meet the Foxes

Basil

Devon

Ember

Basil - Our white male fox. In February 1996 we received a call from a shelter not too far from here. The people at the shelter asked "Would you be interested in a really nice socialized male fox?" Basil turned out to be really, really nice. He is a well socialized pet fox, abandoned by his owners, which probably was due to the fact that no matter how well socialized foxes are, they are still foxes -- red foxes smell musky (somewhat like skunks in fact) and are nocturnal and tend to scream a lot at night, and get into everything. He was not the ideal pet.

Such non-domestic "pets" are often purchased with little or no knowledge as to their care or needs. When they become inconvenient or when there is a problem, people often think that finding a home will not be much of a problem. Nothing could be further from the truth. Despite the fact that Basil was a sweet friendly fox, Wolf Park was the 20th place contacted to take him and he was lucky in that we had a lone female who was accepting of such a young and obstreperous male.

Basil is dilute to the point of being nearly pure white. He loves to jump, climb, kiss, curl up and even sleep on people. It is not all that uncommon for him to climb a person and become a fox-hat for a few enchanting moments.

Devon is a silver-phase female red fox born in 2000. She is almost as social as Basil and occasionally greets visitors with an all-out "squeakfest", giggling and wiggling. She has a very silly grin, and enjoys pouncing her foster sister, Ember, and climbing on human heads and shoulders to survey her domain. (While up there, she also enjoys digging, which can either mean some scrapes and bruises or a WONDERFUL back scratch, depending on your mood!) Sometimes Devon will pee if excited; this is not a good thing while she is sitting on a human back. She is very cute and enjoys tummy rubs and food. Especially food.

Ember is a classically-marked female red fox born in 2000. She came to the Park with her foster sister, Devon and was hand-raised by Park staff. Ember is more shy and reserved than Devon or Basil but will come up to take licorice or raisins from people she knows. Ember and Devon both love to be fed whole bunnies. They always get at least two; Devon and Ember each claim one, and then each sees that the other ALSO has a bunny! They immediately abandon their bunnies and possess the bunny of their sister...then realize that their sister just got THEIR bunny! They will "trade" bunnies like this for several minutes before finally settling down to eat.

- See these two girls when they first arrived at Wolf Park on April 25, 2000!

Meet the Coyotes

Twister

Willow

Twister was born at the Millville Field Station in Utah on April 3, 2006. He is a feisty little coyote and can be quite demanding. Shy is not in his vocabulary.

Twister is a little hellion who is already trying to get into trouble. He likes to greet new people by inviting them to wrestle! This can be a little intimidating so we are working with him to offer more polite invitations to visitors ("Rub my belly?" is a good one).

Twister likes to wrestle with Willow but he often tires out before she does (she is much smaller than he but also much tougher). He will fall asleep while Willow is still jumping up and down on his head and trying, in a friendly way, to eat his ears.

Willow was born at the Millville Field Station in Utah on April 2, 2006. She is a very sweet coyote, well most of the time.

Miss Willow is much more dainty than her foster brother, but you wouldn't know it by how she keeps him in line. Willow loves, loves, loves new people and comes up to them squeaking and grinning and waving her tail. She does not want to wrestle like Twister does -- she wants to bury her head in human clothing and fall asleep cuddled in a little ball. (*Then* she wants to wrestle. ;)

Willow likes to sleep on a big plush blue pillow that a staff member brought in. She likes to lie upon its middle like a queen upon a cushion. She can sleep that way for a while, but then she rolls off. Once she rolled off right onto her head! She was quite sound asleep and actually slept that way, balanced upon her head, for a little while.
