Bison
Bison are one of the most formidable prey animals wolves encounter in the wild. Living in large herds of intelligent, powerful and aggressive adult individuals protecting any vulnerable calves, a healthy bison has almost nothing to fear from even a pack of wolves. A lot of nature shows portray hunting as a process in which the predator sneaks up on the poor, defenceless prey, then overpowers it with impossible strength. In reality, no prey animal is without some sort of defence. Deer, mice, and birds are fast and nimble and generally flee predators. Big prey animals like bison come with horns and hooves with which to attack their potential predator. Wolf Park's bison demonstrate, during the wolf/bison demonstration held weekly during open season, just how difficult it is to be a predator, specifically a wolf. Our bison outweigh our wolves by 800 to 1000 pounds, and not only do they not fear the wolves, sometimes they like to turn the tables and chase the wolves around! |
