The Pack at HowlNight
Winter is a good time to see active wolves. Aggression levels are still high and Seneca in particular has been on Tristan's case...
On February 23, 2002, I decided to bring in my digital camera and took a few fun photos of the wolves' interactions during the program. Yes, they did in fact howl, but I was busy howling along too. However, following the howl there was a very nice interaction between Seneca, the alpha male and Tristan, the beta male. Tristan has been getting himself into trouble a lot lately by continuing to be aggressive toward Marion, Seneca's mate. Well, Seneca can not tolerate a young upstart like Tristan throwing his weight around his female, so Tristan ends up upside down on the ground with a somewhat irate Seneca on top of him. All this is highly ritualized aggression and nobody gets hurt. It also makes for some wonderful expressions! Hopefully someday you can come out to Wolf Park and hear the wolves howl, and growl as well! |
