Intern Responsibilities

Tours and Education
During the open season, interns need to be able to give tours of the park to varying groups of people. They are required to learn enough information to give a 45 minute tour about the parks' history, the way the park is run and information about all the animals at the park. Interns are also expected to learn enough information for a lecture about the Foxes at the park.

Gift Shop Duties
The gift shop is run mainly by the interns. They are required to stock shelves, take stock inventory, run the cash register and assist customers. It is also the responsibility of the interns to ensure that the gift shop and other buildings are tidy and presentable.

Animal Duty
Present interns will train new interns to make up medicated meatballs for the animals that take medication. New interns are expected to learn to give meatballs, fill in the record sheet, change the animals water and give ice. A member of staff clears new interns by giving them a "Meatball Test" to ensure they are capable of carrying out this job correctly and safely.

Butchering and Feeding
New interns will be trained to butcher as part of their animal duty responsibilities. Butchering and feeding take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday morning in summer and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in winter. It usually involves road kill deer but can also include still-born calves and occasionally goats. We tend to use every part of the animal as long as it is edible for canines. Interns should aim to be able to butcher and feed within an hour.

Miscellaneous
Interns take part in a lot of other tasks around the park. They may be involved in projects like putting in water systems, installing electrical systems, building new enclosures or fences etc. There are many maintenance related jobs that aren't at all glamorous but need to be done such as mowing, weedwacking, weeding, sweeping leaves, shovelling snow, fixing fences, tidying buildings... the list is endless!
