On Saturday, June 15, 2002 Wolf Park hosted a Police Dog Demonstration.

Deputies Scott Hodson and Keith Combass and their K9 partners from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff K9 Unit visited Wolf Park to put on a public demonstration, courtesy of the Wolf Park Junior Volunteer program.

This was be a rare opportunity to see how training can affect dog behavior, and to view some exceptionally well-trained German Shepherds, 'Andy', and 'Dag', go through their paces.

Dag is just a pup, still in training, but doing quite well. Nice and focused, then released and did his job quite well. It was fun to watch him run when he was released.

Then it was Andy's turn. Scott was talking about how Andy will be retired in a few years since Police dogs, like any working dog, usually are retired between 8 and 10 years of age. Interestingly enough that is the average life expectancy of a wolf in the wild. However, unlike wild canines who do not have the worlds best medical plan, our canine companions do live much longer and many of the Lafayette Police dogs end up living as pets with their handlers when they retire.
