Since 1981 wolves and bison have been placed together at Wolf Park for a limited length of time to demonstrate how difficult it is to be a wolf hunting large game and how bison can easily protect themselves against a few wolves.
All wolves are healthy and can easily dodge any defensive action the bison may take. The bison are also healthy such that the wolves pose no serious threat to their well being either. This demonstration is held only for educational purposes and every precaution is taken to prevent any injuries. In the near three decades of the demonstration, we have kept a very good record of only minor injuries (just a few scratches or bruises). The demonstration also gives us the opportunity to enrich the lives of the wolves and the bison alike. The wolves get to go out and explore a new area, and the bison get the chance to chase something.
Students and researchers are given the opportunity to study the bison's reaction to the presence of wolves.
The demonstration is held every Sunday (weather permitting) from May to the end of November starting at 1:00 pm with a lecture and the wolves entering the bison pasture at 2:00pm. Following the demonstration we feed the pack a road killed deer to show people the social interactions of a wolf pack after a pseudo kill.
